Institute of Theatre and Opera

The Institute of Theatre and Opera was created in 2007 under the direction of Prof. Maria Ida Biggi.

The Centre manages collections and sections dedicated to European theatre and opera: i.e. the Theatre and Music Archives, The Eleonora Duse Archives, the Aurel Milloss Archives and the Rolandi Collection. The new Centre’s activities include amplifying the material in the iconographic archives through digitalisation of the originals kept in the Foundation and making them available online. Iconography is considered an essential source for the history of theatre, music, dance and opera. The material kept in the archives is interdisciplinary in nature and ranges from portrait painting to stage sets, theatre architecture, costume designs, archaeological finds, paintings, 17th-century librettos and 19th century illustrated magazines. The innovative multidisciplinary approach of the Archives makes them an international reference point for research in this field.
