CALL FOR PAPERS – GIOVANNI BELLINI THE BEST PAINTER OF ALL (A. Dürer)

International Conference, Venice, Fondazione Giorgio Cini, October 27th – 28th

The Fondazione Giorgio Cini is organizing an international symposium on Giovanni Bellini (c. 1433 – 1516) and Venetian Renaissance painting. Bellini was the greatest fifteenth-century Venetian painter and, according to Dürer, still the “best” at the turn of the sixteenth century. During his long career, he invented and renewed the technique and style of Venetian painting, and transmitted his results to a large group of students and followers.

The conference aims to analyze his entire career, not least in relation to the artistic and cultural context, and in particular will encourage further study on the following themes:

– Bellini and the invention of the altarpiece

– Bellini and devotional painting

– Bellini and the classical world

– Bellini and the landscape

– Bellini’s heirs and his “creati”

The conference will be held at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, October 27th – 28th.

The proceedings will subsequently be published.
