Based on materials kept in the Luigi Nono Archives, Venice, this book brings together over 270 letters, postcards and telegrams, almost all previously unpublished. In these letters Nono and his correspondents (leaders of the Italian Communist party like Enrico Berlinguer, Pietro Ingrao, Giorgio Napolitano and Rossana Rossanda , but also musicians, musicologists, workers, and leading international politicians like Fidel Castro, Salvador Allende and Václav Havel) discuss very varied topics of Italian and international politics and their relations with culture, art, music and society. Edited by Antonio Trudu, the letters are preceded by a wide-ranging introduction and followed by an index of names, abbreviations and Nono’s works cited in the text, plus a list of the correspondents, with brief biographical notes on each of them. What emerges from this book is a new portrait of the political Nono. The book is thus not only intended for musicians and music lovers, but all those who are interested in the relations between music and the other arts and, more generally, politics, culture and society.
