Luigi Cortese collection

The Luigi Cortese Collection was donated to the Cini Foundation in May 2002 by musician's widow, Giuliana Gabanizza. Cortese (1899 - 1976) was a pianist and composer from Genoa, where he directed the music academy and the Paganini violin competition. He wrote operas, oratories, symphonic and chamber music, lyrics for songs and piano, and pieces for piano. The collection conserves manuscripts and editions of his compositions as well as a considerable number of documents: concert programmes, newspaper articles, reviews, advertisements and a copious correspondence that testifies to his contacts with the world of music of his day and to friendships with Alfredo Casella (under whom he studied), Luigi Dallapiccola, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Goffredo Petrassi and Luigi Rognoni. The cataloguing of the collection has been financed by the Superintendency of Veneto Archives and has been entrusted to Vitale Fano.
