Music from oral traditions in contemporary society: research, teaching and archives

Research in the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies (IISMC) is currently being pursued in various directions:

1) Seminars and study meetings held with the aim of reflecting on the main issues in the international debate of ethnomusicology research. The international seminars (organised by Francesco Giannattasio) are the highlight of this activity. At the next seminar (January 2010) scholars and musicians will explore the theme of “Ethnomusicology seen from music”. In addition to the seminars, the IISMC is organising study days dedicated to specific research topics such as “Music in the territories of the former Ottoman Empire”, and, in December 2010, “Music and Religious Practice in Central Asia”. The Institute also hosts meetings held by international organisations, such as the European Seminar on Ethnomusicology.
Some of the previous initiatives in this field have been followed up by the publication of printed books or documents available on the Cini Foundation website.

2) Another field of research is current polyphonic singing in Italy and Europe. Now in its 13th edition, the In Viva Voce series of seminars is organised by Maurizio Agamennone in collaboration with University of Venice. The series aims to explore modes of ensemble singing found in the Italian and European traditions today by holding study meetings and concerts. The annual meetings are accompanied by research and documentation campaigns on polyphonic singing in the Veneto area, which enjoys support in the form of the Branca Scholarships.

3) Another of the Institute’s objectives is to create a research archive in the Institute. The need for the archive arises from the decision to order the existing documentation and to supplement it with new acquisitions. As part of this activity, an international conference will be held in July 2009 to reflect on the role of multimedia archives for documentation, research and the diffusion of knowledge. Moreover, the Institute will set up a specific research project on the Alain Daniélou bibliographical bequest in the Cini Foundation.
