Ethnomusicology
Founded in 1970 by Alain Daniélou, and subsequently directed by Ivan Vandor and Francesco Giannattasio, the Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies (IISMC) promotes knowledge about some of the finest forms of expression in various musical cultures by organising courses, workshops, concerts, seminars, conferences and publications.
Each year the Institute organises theoretical-practical courses and seminars on musical traditions (both instrumental and vocal) and dance from various contemporary world cultures. Right from the outset the Institute had a special interest in art music from the Indian sub-continent. At present the courses, seminars and annual master classes also feature a number of leading performers from other musical traditions in regions such as the Middle East, Eastern Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia.
The Institute also organises annual theoretical-practical seminars and conferences on intercultural musicology issues, giving rise to publications and multimedia works. Some of the projects have been pursued on the basis of agreements with Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, the Vicenza Conservatory and other cultural institutions.
