REGIONAL PHOTO LIBRARY OF GIORGIO CINI FOUNDATION
Entrusted by the Veneto Region in 1981 to the Giorgio Cini Foundation, the Regional Photo Library consists of around 30,000 images of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, weapons, coins, glass objects, pieces of furniture, porcelain, ethno-anthropological items etc., owned by local Veneto museums or organisations with a local interest. Made up of average format negatives and their contact prints, the material comes from specific photographic campaigns carried out from 1976 to 1980, as a consequence of Regional Law no. 45 of 2 September 1974, aimed at improving the photographic documentation and the indexing of the cultural goods in museums and also to guarantee they are studied and safeguarded. Priority ha been given to the collections whose integrity and conservation are at risk. As part of a broader project to preserve and make better use of the photographic archives in the Institute of Art History Photo Library, in 2004, with funding from the Veneto Region, the digitalisation of the material in the Regional Photo Library was begun with the aim of encouraging wider use through online consultation. Already partly online, the images are accompanied by an index card with the essential details about the object reproduced, which had been written on the back of the photos after the photographic campaigns carried out by the museums; when possible this information has been suitably updated with bibliographic details, especially as regards the author and cultural background, chronology and subject matter. The method use ensured standardisation according to the rules of the Central Institute for Cataloguing and Documentation.
