The
international congress on Turfan and Tun-huang: the Texts. Encounter of
Civilizations on the Silk Route, organized in 1990 by the Fondazione
Giorgio Cini (Istituto «Venezia e l’Oriente») in collaboration with the
Istituto Italiano per il Medio ed Estremo Oriente and the Istituto
Universitario Orientale of Naples, represents the first of a series of
international conferences devoted to different aspects of the various
civilizations whose meeting places were the two caravan cities of
Turfan and Tun-huang.

interventi della giornata in memoria di Alain Daniélou tenutasi il 6
marzo 1995, presso la Fondazione Cini, ai quali si è aggiunto un saggio
di Gian Giuseppe Filippi, professore di Indologia all’Università Ca’
Foscari di Venezia, che non potè essere presente alla manifestazione.

Dal
punto di vista dell’origine e dello sviluppo dei generi narrativi in
Asia, le aree culturali indiana, tibetana e cinese sono strettamente
connesse e, come mostrano alcuni interventi raccolti in questo volume,
importanti cicli narrativi passano dall’una all’altra trasformandosi ed
arricchendosi di elementi locali. Il rapporto fra narrativa orale e
scritta e quello fra narrativa religiosa e laica sono stati due dei
temi affrontati nel corso del Convegno di cui questo volume raccoglie
gli Atti, tenutosi nell’aprile del 1997 e frutto di una collaborazione
tra l’Istituto Venezia e l’Oriente della Fondazione Giorgio Cini, il
Dipartimento di Studi Indologici ed Estremo Oriente dell’Università Ca’
Foscari di Venezia e l’Istituto Italiano per l’Africa e l’Oriente.
Per quanto riguarda la narrativa religiosa – in particolare induista e
buddhista – due degli interventi hanno poi sottolineato la stretta
connessione fra narrazione scritta e narrazione per immagini, con la
conseguente necessità di affrontare ormai questo tipo di fonti anche
con gli strumenti offerti dall’indagine iconografica.
