❗️ CANCELLED ❗️ Historical Studies Seminar The Presence of the Sacred

Having reached its fortieth annual edition, the Historical Studies Seminar promoted by the Fondazione Giorgio Cini Institute of History confirms the enduring vitality of the event in 2020, thanks to the presence, as always, of illustrious senior speakers and younger but equally competent colleagues.

There is nothing new as far as the overall organisation is concerned. As usual, there will be ve half-day sessions dedicated to the ve historical geographical areas that will be considered. The new feature this year concerns the topic, which goes under the title of “The Presence of the Sacred”. This framework-title contains a wide range of themes: from churches as assembly meeting places to the motivations of urban events, sacred and profane love, borderline consecrations, ecclesiastical benefices and suspicions of profanatory irreverence.

Historical Studies Seminar Great and Small Illusions

From 13 to 15 May, the annual study meetings organised by the Institute for the History of the Venetian State and Society will focus on “Great and Small Illusions”. Topics for discussion will include the illusory drive giving rise to the birth of the city; the yearning for the ideal villa; the expectations aroused by modernity; and the ambitions underlying the cardinalate in the 16th century.
Pointing out that illusions, whether accompanied or not by delusions, are a fundamental feature of the human condition is obvious but not banal. Hence the five half-day sessions of the seminar on the theme of great and small illusions, historically found in various geo-historical areas of the Italian peninsula. For example, the great illusion running through the history of Venice of its unique birth for an exceptional destiny – a great illusion that we are tempted to describe as collective. Then there are the illusions woven into individual events, such as those that fuelled Pietro Bembo’s aspirations to don the cardinal’s purple.

Historical Studies Seminar Places for Culture; Culture for Place

The seminar on “Places for Culture; Culture for Places” will be – at least this is the aim of the Institute for the History of the Venetian State and Society – a stimulating opportunity for reflection on the interaction between the container and the content, between the setting and the person who thinks, speaks and writes in it. In other words, to choose some Venetian examples, we might consider Petrarch’s home at Arquà, the Asolo garden of Bembo’s dialogue on love, the Palazzo Ducale as the headquarters and expression of state supremacy, or the Padua botanical garden gradually transformed from its auxiliary purpose as an apothecary laboratory to an indispensable resource for botany as an independent discipline.

Books at San Giorgio

Books at San Giorgio, a series of meetings presenting the latest publications concerning or by
the Fondazione Cini, has now reached its thirteenth edition.

On 13 March the latest volume of Studi Veneziani (for the year 2016) will be presented. Edited by the Institute of the History of the Venetian State and Society, this journal explores the manifold aspects of over a thousand years of Venetian history.

On 20 March, the featured book is Il teatro in fotografia. L’immagine della prima attrice italiana fra Otto e Novecento by Marianna Zannoni. This study of leading ladies in Italian theatre at the turn of the 20th century focuses on great divas (Adelaide Ristori, Eleonora Duse and Tina Di Lorenzo) and the way that they were portrayed in a system popularising images and creating myths capable of influencing social customs.

The series will end on 23 March with two books produced by the Institute of Music: Musical Improvisation and Open Forms in the Age of Beethoven edited by Gianmario Borio and Angela Carone, and Studies in Historical Improvisation. From Cantare super Librum to Partimenti edited by Massimiliano Guido. The first book explores the central role of improvisation in both public occasions and the private lives of many artists from the late 18th and to mid-19th century, while the second book deals with the study of improvisation as theorised and practiced from the 16th to the 20th century.

Historical Studies Seminar The Genesis of Resolutions: with the Best Intentions, the Worst Intentions, and Beyond All Intentions

As usual, the Historical Studies Seminar organised by the Institute of the History of the Venetian State and Society is spread over five half days – from 15 to 17 May 2017 – dedicated to five different aspects of the overall theme, that is “resolutions”. The seminar will explore the mixture of the said and the unsaid, or the explicit statement and potholed background in decision-making. The is where raison d’état – especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was spelled out and unhesitatingly theorised – demands the feigning of convictions and concealing of real thoughts nurtured in private, at times with no clear boundary between good and evil, or even truth and falsehood. Given this situation, the seminar may find itself moving between
cases of extraordinary and ordinary ambiguity.

Books at San Giorgio

The book launch series dedicated to the latest Fondazione Giorgio Cini publications resumes this autumn.

The first date, 11 October, is dedicated to the presentation of the Catalogo della raccolta di miniature della Fondazione Giorgio Cini, edited by Federica Toniolo and Massimo Medica. This book is the result of the work of around fifty expert scholars who made a complete catalogue of the valuable collection of miniatures assembled by Vittorio Cini and presented to the Foundation in 1962.

At the second launch, 17 October, the focus will be on Alessandro Borin’s critical edition of Vivaldi’s Opera VI. This collection of six violin concertos published in Amsterdam in 1719 is evidence of Vivaldi’s recent accomplishments, both in terms of form (the division into three movements), and the emancipation of the solo instrument from its orchestral partners.

The last date, 25 October, will be devoted to Studi Veneziani, the journal edited by the Institute for the History of the Venetian State and Society, whose hefty tomes explore various aspects of the history of Venice. On this occasion the years 2014 and 2015 will be presented: in addition to the usual studies, they include the acts of a one-day conference held at the College de France, Paris, in 2012, in memory of the historian Alberto Tenenti.

Studi Veneziani

An interdisciplinary journal that explores the multiple aspects of the history of Venice and the Venetian State, addressing themes that extend beyond historical-political, institutional, social, and economic realms, including literary and artistic aspects.

Founded in 1959 as the ‘Bollettino’ of the Institute for the History of the Venetian State and Society, the journal changed its name in 1965. It is currently directed by Egidio Ivetic, the present director of the Institute.
