Connoisseurs of Chaos
Connoisseurs of Chaos shows the restless, ruthless energy of the universe – characterized in the chaotic group sections of the dance – giving way to intimate personal scenes in duets, trio and solos. In creating this work Armitage was inspired by fractals, the geometry of nature – clouds, coastlines, and constellations.
This is the European premiere of the show which made its debut at the Joyce Theatre in New York in 2008.
Choreography: Karole Armitage; music: Morton Feldman – Patterns in a Chromatic Field (1981); set design: David Salle; costume design: Peter Speliopoulos; Lighting Design: Clifton Taylor; technical director: Joe Doran; dancers: Leonides D. Arpon, Kristina Bethel-Blunt, Megumi Eda, William Isaac, Luke Manley, Mei-Hua Wang
Karol Armitage is a world-famous dancer and choreographer. She has acted as artistic director for some of the leading contemporary dance festivals including the International Festival of Contemporary Dance at the Venice Biennale.
The show will be followed by a talk between Karole Armitage and Antonio Lazcano on Galileo and the question of life in the Universe
Galileo stands out among the scientists discussing the possibility of life appearing in other parts of the universe for the caution with which he treated this possibility: neither confirming nor denying it, he left calculations and decisions on the probability of it existing to “men wiser than me”. Today we may be little wiser but our approach to the topic has changed dramatically. Thanks also to Galileo and his observations of the moon’s surface.
Antonio Lazcano is professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico City. He has studied the origin and early evolution of life for the past thirty-five years.
