ABSTRACT

These lectures will appeal to ethnomusicologists,
sinologists, anthropologists, students of religion, and all interested in the
modern history of China.

26 March, 2012
"A well kept secret: folk music in the Chinese
countryside”

In the first lecture, Dr Jones will outline the
maintenance of local cultures in China, where music generally accompanies
life-cycle and calendrical rituals. Filmed examples for both vocal and
instrumental music at funerals and temple fairs will illustrate the contrast
with sanitized media images of Chinese music. The presentation will further
comment on the relation of ritual with local politics and society in modern
times.

In collaboration with the Department of Studies on Asia and
Mediterranean Africa, Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, and the Confucius
Institutes of Venice, Turin, Milan and Rome, the Intercultural Institute
of Comparative Music Studies of the Giorgio Cini Foundation has
organised a third series of meetings dedicated to Chinese music.
They consist of two lectures to be given by Professor Stephen Jones, a
leading expert on Chinese folk music, at the Palazzo Vendramin dei
Carmini and two concerts to be performed by the Li Manshan Daoist
musicians at the Giorgio Cini Foundation and at the Auditorium Santa
Margherita, Venice.
