CALL FOR PAPERS

International conference
The Triumph of Baroque Venice in the Age of Francesco Morosini (1619-1694)
Ceremonies, arts and culture

Venice, Fondazione Giorgio Cini Foundation, 19-20 November 2019

As part of the celebrations for the fourth centenary of the birth of Francesco Morosini, called Peloponnesiaco, the Fondazione Giorgio Cini is organising an international conference dedicated to the celebrated capitano general da mar and doge. A leading player in the up-and-down events in 17th-century Venice, sorely tried by the saga of the last, uncertain war against the Turks, Morosini stands as an emblematic figure in an age which saw a remarkable cultural flourishing in the lagoon city. In fact, 17th-century Venice played a crucial role in the rise of drama in musica, the modern novel, academic debates, great baroque decorations, public statues, naturalistic painting and celebratory public spectacles.

The conference sets out to explore these topics with the aim of encouraging studies and research on the following themes: the collecting of the Morosini family; artistic and book production in the years of Francesco Morosini’s rise and triumph; and, lastly, celebrations of Morosini and his self-celebration.

The conference will take place on 19-20 November 2019 at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice. It will be divided into three sessions with a total of around twenty speakers.

Advisory Committee: Luca Massimo Barbero, Gino Benzoni, Maria Ida Biggi, Matteo Casini, Simone Guerriero, Vincenzo Mancini and Gilberto Pizzamiglio.

All submissions for proposed papers must include a title and an abstract (max. 300 words), along with contact details and a 100-word curriculum vitae of the speaker.

Submissions must be sent by email to the conference secretary’s office (morosini@cini.it) no later than 30 April 2019.
