{"id":35659,"date":"2014-09-22T11:05:23","date_gmt":"2014-09-22T09:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cini.it\/?post_type=cini_events&#038;p=35659"},"modified":"2026-05-27T10:49:47","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T08:49:47","slug":"the-art-history-seminars","status":"publish","type":"cini_events","link":"https:\/\/www.cini.it\/en\/eventi\/the-art-history-seminars\/","title":{"rendered":"The Art History Seminars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Exactly sixty years ago, in<strong> 1954,<\/strong> thanks to a group of art historians,\u00a0led by <strong>Giuseppe Fiocco<\/strong> and including experts of the calibre of\u00a0Sergio Bettini, Carlo Anti and Piero Zampetti, and with Vittorio\u00a0Cini\u2019s resolute support, the Fondazione Giorgio Cini <strong>Institute of\u00a0Art History<\/strong> was created and immediately revealed its potential to<br \/>\nbecome a major international study and research centre. The newly\u00a0founded institute was officially unveiled in October of the same\u00a0year, during the historic conference on Figurative Art and Abstract\u00a0Art. The Institute of Art History\u2019s critical, interdisciplinary approach\u00a0and diversified methodological orientations soon made its<br \/>\nsignificance and primary aim clear. It was intended to play a leading\u00a0role not only in academic research into the art of the past, but\u00a0also in the debate on contemporary art by promoting international\u00a0studies and major exhibitions. To celebrate the creation of the institute,\u00a0the Fondazione Giorgio Cini has organised for 30-31 October\u00a0an event that will explore the great depth and significance of that\u00a0historic conference by placing it at the centre of the first edition of\u00a0The Art History Seminars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The first day<\/strong> will focus on the state of art criticism with reference\u00a0to the leading players and speake rs at the historic 1954 meeting, such as Gino Severini,<br \/>\nEnrico Prampolini, Emilio Vedova, Felice Carena and Berto Lardera. There will also be a\u00a0focus on the main issues discussed at that conference with the aim of describing the ensuing\u00a0historiographical developments as well as current critical prospects. This also implies the\u00a0ambition of creating a series of comparisons concerning the current state of art historical\u00a0research methodologies applied to 20th-century art and criticism. Some of the topics addressed\u00a0will include French, Italian and German post-war critics (bearing in mind the\u00a0historic conference participants); the 1954 Venice Biennale; the abstract-figurative debate; the\u00a0\u201cGroup of Eight\u201d; the \u201cNew Front of the Arts\u201d; the second wave of Futurism and the role\u00a0of Severini; American abstract art and forays into post-war sculpture; 1950s Europe and\u00a0the currents of Informel, Spatialism and Neo-avantgardes; plus various other subjects that\u00a0arose at the conference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The second day<\/strong>, organised in collaboration with the Palazzo Grassi,\u00a0will involve a debate on issues, orientations, destinies, visions and projects associated with\u00a0the discipline of art history.
