From 13 to 18 April 2015 the Institute of Comparative Music Studies<\/strong> is staging the fourth edition of B\u00eer\u00fbn<\/strong>, a series of advanced workshops on classical Ottoman music for professional and semi-professional musicians, directed by Kudsi Erguner<\/strong>. The term B\u00eer\u00fbn refers to what was once the school for Ottoman court musicians. One of the overall aims of the workshops is to make San Giorgio a centre for the cultural development of and thinking about the musical heritage of the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean basin. The theme chosen by Kudsi Erguner for this year\u2019s workshop is \u201cThe maftir\u00eem and the works of Sephardi Jews in Ottoman classical music<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

An international group of scholarship holders is to be chosen by calls for applications for male voice and the following instruments: ney (flute), \u2018\u00fbd (short-necked lute), tanb\u00fbr (long-necked lute), kan\u00fbn (plucked box zither), kemen\u00e7e (bowed box-shaped lute) or yayli tanb\u00fbr (bowed long-necked lute) and percussions \u2013 def or bender (frame drums), zarb (goblet drum) and kud\u00fbm (drums). During the week-long workshop the musicians will study works in the spiritual tradition of the maftir\u00eem and by Jewish composers, such as Moshe Faro, who lived in the second half of the 18th century and was active at the court of Sultan Mahmud I (1730-1754), and the great \u0130zak Fresco Romano (1745-1814), active at the court of Selim III (1761-1808).<\/p>\n

On\u00a0Saturday\u00a018 April\u00a0<\/strong>at 6 p.m.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the workshop will end with a concert<\/strong>\u00a0by the scholarship winners led by Kudsi Erguner. Download<\/a> the poster of the concert.<\/p>\n

As for the previous editions, this year B\u00eer\u00fbn will again be followed by a one day seminar<\/strong>\u00a0entitled “Music and Jewish culture in the Ottoman world<\/strong>” coordinated\u00a0by Giovanni De Zorzi <\/strong>and Piergabriele Mancuso<\/strong>,\u00a0organized in collaboration with Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage,\u00a0Ca\u2019 Foscari University<\/strong>,\u00a0Venice. The one day seminar will be held on Wednesday 15 April at Ca’ Foscari University, Venice.
