{"id":57137,"date":"2017-02-27T11:25:54","date_gmt":"2017-02-27T10:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cini.it\/en\/?post_type=cini_events&#038;p=57137"},"modified":"2025-01-31T11:33:23","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T10:33:23","slug":"birun-ottoman-music-workshop-court-music-from-herat-to-costantinople","status":"publish","type":"cini_events","link":"https:\/\/www.cini.it\/en\/eventi\/birun-ottoman-music-workshop-court-music-from-herat-to-costantinople\/","title":{"rendered":"B\u00eer\u00fbn Ottoman Music Workshop Court Music: from Herat to Costantinople"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>27 March to 1 April 2017, the Fondazione Giorgio Cini Intercultural\u00a0Institute for Comparative Music Studies is holding the sixth\u00a0edition of B\u00eer\u00fbn, a series of advanced workshops on Ottoman classical\u00a0music, directed by Kudsi Erguner, and addressed to professional or\u00a0semi-professional musicians.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s workshop focuses on the music at the Khorasan courts,\u00a0and especially works by the composer Abd-al Qader Mar\u00e2gh\u00ee (1360?-1435). Compared to the previous editions, there will be two extra\u00a0scholarships, thanks to the contribution of the Turkish Ministry of\u00a0Foreign Affairs. The eight scholarship-holders will be selected after\u00a0an international call for applications for musicians specialised in the\u00a0various instruments (ney, \u00fbd, tanb\u00fbr, kan\u00fbn, kemen\u00e7e, percussions and\u00a0singing). The participants will then have the opportunity to study pieces\u00a0composed by Mar\u00e2gh\u00ee, along with works attributed to the Timurid<br \/>\nsultan Huseyn Bayqara (1469-1506) and the Persian-speaking poet\u00a0Molla Jam\u00ee (1414-1492). All of these works were saved from oblivions\u00a0thanks to musicologists such as Rauf Yekt\u00e2 bey (1871-1935), Refik<br \/>\nFersan (1893-1965) and Ulvi Erguner (1924-1974). Khorasan (\u201crising sun\u201d in Persian) is a\u00a0historic region now divided up between modern-day Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan\u00a0and Tajikistan. Its principal cities, Ghazni, Bukhara and Herat, were once the capitals of\u00a0various dynasties, such as the Sassanid, Ghaznavid and Timurid. Musically-speaking the area\u00a0was the cradle of a culture underlying the art music in all the courts in this great Asian region.<br \/>\nFrom the age of the sultan Mahmud of Ghazna (971-1030) until the end of the Ottoman\u00a0empire (1923), all the musical traditions from the various courts were so intimately interconnected\u00a0that today you can make a fascinating journey in musical history from Istanbul to Herat,\u00a0and from Herat to Baghdad and India.<br \/>\nThis historically documented musical heritage was preserved and transmitted by the Ottomans\u00a0until the 20th century, especially in the capital, Istanbul, while in other Middle Eastern countries\u00a0it was gradually replaced by popular or regional music.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop will end <strong>April 1 at 6 pm<\/strong> with a<strong> concert by the B\u00eer\u00fbn ensemble<\/strong>, conducted by Kudsi Erguner,\u00a0and will be preceded by a study day devoted to Music and Culture from Herat to Constantinople\u00a0on 21 March.
