As usual, the Historical Studies Seminar organised by the Institute of the History of the\u00a0Venetian State and Society is spread over five half days \u2013 from 15 to 17 May 2017 \u2013 dedicated\u00a0to five different aspects of the overall theme, that is \u201cresolutions\u201d. The seminar will explore the\u00a0mixture of the said and the unsaid, or the explicit statement and potholed background in decision-making. The is where raison d\u2019\u00e9tat \u2013 especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was\u00a0spelled out and unhesitatingly theorised \u2013 demands the feigning of convictions and concealing\u00a0of real thoughts nurtured in private, at times with no clear boundary between good and evil,\u00a0or even truth and falsehood. Given this situation, the seminar may find itself moving between
\ncases of extraordinary and ordinary ambiguity.<\/p>\n
