Part of the celebrations for the centenary of the death of Arrigo Boito\u00a0(1842-1918), this exhibition reconstructs the artistic and personal\u00a0relationship of Eleonora Duse with the famous Veneto librettist, poet\u00a0and composer \u2013 a man of great learning who was for long a guide\u00a0for the actress and her theatre. The Institute of Theatre and Opera is\u00a0thus showing to the public the Boito documents acquired through the\u00a0Carandini Albertini, Sister Mary Mark and Nardi donations: these\u00a0materials including fascinating items, such as autograph drafts and\u00a0sketches for his opera Nerone, original photographs, the captivating\u00a0correspondence consisting of letters that the two exchanged from\u00a01884 to 1890, and the scripts of the Shakespearean plays Antony and\u00a0Cleopatra, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth, which Boito translated and\u00a0adapted with Eleonora\u2019s specific acting skills in mind. There is also\u00a0a portrait of the actress by the German painter Franz von Lembach,\u00a0which Boito had always kept at his bedside: on his death, in keeping\u00a0with his will, it was returned to Duse.
\nOpened to the public in 2011, \u201cEleonora Duse\u2019s Room\u201d was created\u00a0with the idea of making accessible the valuable heritage of the Duse Archives to anyone interested.
\nThe original materials from the archive are exhibited on rotation in a series of temporary\u00a0exhibitions aimed at exploring one or more aspects of the actress\u2019s life and art.<\/p>\n
