The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have made 2018 the European\u00a0Year of Cultural Heritage with the aim of: promoting cultural diversity, intercultural\u00a0dialogue and social cohesion; reinforcing the contribution that the European cultural heritage\u00a0can make to society and the economy through its capacity to support the cultural and creative\u00a0sectors, including small and medium-sized enterprises; contributing to the enhancement of the cultural heritage as an important factor in relations between the European Union and other\u00a0countries, based on the interests and requests of partner countries and on Europe\u2019s expertise in\u00a0the field of cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

Within this framework, the Fondazione Giorgio Cini and the University of Oxford Bodleian\u00a0Libraries have organised an international symposium entitled Preserving the Past for the Future,\u00a0to be held on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore on 23 October 2018.<\/p>\n

The meeting will discuss the topic of the political, cultural and technical challenges constantly\u00a0faced by public and private institutions responsible for protecting the heritage, also taking\u00a0into account the role that international cooperation can play in solving these kinds of issues.
\nThe theme of how digital technologies can preserve and enhance the great European cultural\u00a0heritage will also be considered.
\nThe Symposium will be divided into thematic sessions involving institutions and individuals\u00a0from various world regions with different cultural traditions (India, China, America and\u00a0Europe). The aim is to outline a global perspective on the topic, through comparative analysis\u00a0and sharing knowledge and experiences.<\/p>\n

Supported by the Helen Hamlyn Trust, the symposium will be conducted in English. Speakers\u00a0include Vint Cerf (Google),\u00a0James Cuno (The J. Paul Getty Trust),\u00a0Peter Frankopan (Univeristy of Oxford),\u00a0Pasquale Gagliardi (Fondazione Giorgio Cini), Jack Lohman (Royal BC Museum),\u00a0Adam Lowe (Factum Arte),\u00a0Da Dong Ma (Shanghai Gui Yin),\u00a0Richard Ovenden (Bodleian Libraries),\u00a0Shobita Punja (The Helen Hamlyn Trust),\u00a0Sarah Thomas (Harvard Library),\u00a0Ana Luiza Thompson-Flores (Unesco),\u00a0Guo Xiaoling (Beijing Capital Museum).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":66424,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"cini_tax_event_categories":[1465],"cini_tax_institutes":[],"cini_tax_event_locations":[1464],"class_list":["post-66237","cini_events","type-cini_events","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","cini_tax_event_categories-meetings","cini_tax_event_locations-island-of-san-giorgio-maggiore"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\nInternational Symposium Preserving the Past for the Future -
