The choice of theme for this year\u2019s Dialoghi <\/strong>was based on a number of reflections: martyrdom – according to its general etymological definition as “self-sacrifice to bear witness to an ideal<\/strong>”
\n– is a universal phenomenon that cuts across cultures and human
\nhistory, and whose ‘declarative\u2019 character fundamentally distinguishes
\nit from sacrifice. <\/p>\n

It can certainly be considered as having an archetype in Western civilisation<\/strong>: Prometheus is one of our culture\u2019s founding myths, while the cross figures prominently among our most commonly found symbols. <\/p>\n

For a long time martyrdom seemed to have disappeared from our
\nphenomenological horizons, as if there were no longer any room for it
\nin an increasingly secularised society. Although the twentieth century
\nwas a century of martyrs – according to the traditional definition of
\npeople who undergo and knowingly accept suffering and death to bear
\nwitness to a belief – the phenomenon was ignored or neglected. It was
\nas if an unshakeable culture of life inevitably involved denying the
\nvalue of suffering and death. <\/p>\n

But the eruption into globalized society of “new martyrs<\/strong>”,
\nembodying an offensive vision of bearing witness by willingly
\ndestroying themselves and others, challenges beliefs in the value of
\nhuman life, once apparently so deeply rooted and widely shared. It also
\nforcefully raises inevitable questions at a time when the power and
\nmystery of the phenomenon is strikingly amplified by the mass media<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

To what extent can a semantic analysis inform our efforts in
\ndistinguishing between and understanding the various forms of
\nmartyrdom? Just how far is the modern version of martyrdom due to a new
\nintrusion of religion into civil life? What is the relationship between
\nreligious testimony and political vocation? From this point of view
\nwhat do ‘traditional\u2019 martyrs<\/strong> – who continue their
\nsilent march in today\u2019s world and seem to show no interest in the
\nvisibility of their gestures – have in common with the ‘modern\u2019 martyrs<\/strong>, who parade their gestures and augment their communicational impact through media exposure?<\/p>\n

What mechanisms make suicide and assassination acceptable as ‘civil\u2019
\nforms (legitimate and meritorious) of violence? Can martyrdom – in its
\nnew forms – be considered an ‘analyser<\/strong>\u2019 capable of
\nrevealing the workings of the globalized post-modernist society? What
\n‘discourse\u2019 do martyrs entrust their tortured and killed bodies with?
\nCan artists and poets help us to decipher this discourse? What role does the rite of martyrdom play<\/strong> – in its various forms – in the symbolic economy of our different civilisations? <\/p>\n

Such issues cannot only be left to the experts, but must be tackled
\nwith an authentically interdisciplinary approach involving, alongside political scientists<\/strong> and historians of religions<\/strong>, sociologists<\/strong>, philosophers<\/strong>, anthropologists<\/strong>, artists<\/strong>, and writers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The participants at the dialogues include: Elizabeth Clavarie, Anna
\nBozzo, Giovanni Filoramo, Bruno Karsenti, Gilles Kepel, David Laitin,
\nCharles Malamoud, Robert Pape, Ian Shapiro and Bernard Yack.<\/p>\n
