{"id":80808,"date":"2021-09-03T14:14:42","date_gmt":"2021-09-03T12:14:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cini.it\/?post_type=cini_events&#038;p=80808"},"modified":"2025-01-31T10:01:18","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T09:01:18","slug":"meeting-and-concert-of-indian-music-with-kirpal-and-gurdit-panesar","status":"publish","type":"cini_events","link":"https:\/\/www.cini.it\/en\/eventi\/meeting-and-concert-of-indian-music-with-kirpal-and-gurdit-panesar\/","title":{"rendered":"Meeting and Concert of Indian Music with Kirpal and Gurdit Panesar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Wednesday 24 November, 6 pm<\/strong><br \/>\nConcert with free admission &#8211; Reservation required<br \/>\n<em>Reservations will be accepted from 17 November by filling in the form that will be specially uploaded on this page.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"\/?page_id=9947\">Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies<\/a> resumes its autumn activities with a meeting and concert dedicated to Indian music.<br \/>\nThe event, curated by Prof. <strong>Laura Leante<\/strong>, is organised in collaboration with <strong>Durham University<\/strong>\u2019s Music Department.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the occasion, the internationally <strong>renowned virtuoso <em>esraj <\/em>player Kirpal Singh Panesar<\/strong> was invited to perform at San Giorgio Island.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Part of the Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies\u2019 long-standing efforts to promote the music of the Indian subcontinent, this concert is a rare opportunity to hear the <em>esraj<\/em>, a North Indian stringed instrument. Kirpal Singh Panesar will also play the <strong><em>tar shehnai<\/em><\/strong>, an <em>esraj<\/em> whose sound is amplified by a bell-shaped metal horn attached to the sound board. The name (literally \u201cstringed oboe\u201d) refers to the similarity in timbre between the <em>tar shehnai<\/em> and the wind instrument.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kirpal Singh Panesar\u2019s training reflects his twofold musical sensibility: he studied both with the great shehnai master<strong> Ustad Bismillah Khan<\/strong> and with string virtuosos, such as <strong>Ustad Surjeet Singh<\/strong> and <strong>Ustad Gurdev Singh<\/strong>.
