\nThe ney<\/em> is an instrument of milleniums past that has become
\nthe only wind instrument used in classical Persian, Arab and
\nTurkish-Ottoman ensembles. Ever since the 9th century it has been among
\nthe rare musical instruments used in the Sufi<\/em> ceremonial encounter know as the ‘sam\u00e2<\/em>‘,
\nin which one listens to music and poetry to achieve a special inner
\nstate, which can be defined as ecstasy or, more correctly, ‘instasi<\/em>‘. From the 13th century on, it has had a particular musical and symbolic role within the Sufi<\/em> brotherhood known as mevleviye<\/em> or, in the West, as the ‘whirling dervishes’, which follows the example of the Sufi<\/em> poet Mevl\u00e2na Jal\u00e2l-ud-D\u00een Rum\u00ee (Balkh, 1207 – Konya, 1273), whose works are written in Persian.<\/p>\n

Kudsi Erguner <\/strong>(1952)
\ncomes quite naturally to this spiritual and musical tradition. He is
\nthe son of a family of neyzen begun a century ago by his grandfather
\nS\u00fcleyman Erguner (1902 – 1953) and carried on by his father Ulvi
\nErguner (1924 – 1974), famous soloist of his time and director of the
\nDepartment of Traditional Music for Istanbul Radio. With more than
\nfifty recordings to his name and through collaborative efforts in the
\nfields of music, theatre (Peter Brook), film (Martin Scorsese, Marco
\nFerreri) and dance (Carolyn Carlson, Maurice Bejart), Kudsi Erguner is,
\nalongside his brother S\u00fcleyman (1957) and Niyazi Sayin (1927), one the
\nmost famous neyzen<\/em> in the world.\n<\/p>\n
