In the history of healthcare and epidemic emergencies, the experience of the Serenissima remains extremely significant and paradigmatic. Venice was on the cutting edge of crisis management, as seen during the plagues of 1576-77 and 1630-31, and was highly effective both in implementing prophylactic strategies and in implementing a genuine health protection policy, especially in the maritime regions bordering on the Ottoman Empire, so-called European Turkey: an area where the plague was almost endemic, a hotbed of infection that people feared as much as war.<\/p>\n
The book sets out to provide a potted introduction to the subject of Venice and the history of epidemics, considering the location of the Serenissima between Europe and the Mediterranean, bordering on epidemic areas, while highlighting the events that took place and health policies implemented between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries, as well as the elaboration of the epidemic crisis through expressions of faith, art and architecture.<\/p>\n
