Casanova Venezia e l’Europa
To mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Casanova (2 April 1725 – 4 June 1798), the Fondazione Giorgio Cini is taking part in the city’s celebrations with a major double exhibition entitled Casanova, Venezia e l’Europa. The aim of the catalogue is to bring out a complex and multidisciplinary portrait of one of the most iconic figures in the history of Venice, who played a leading role over the last century of the existence of the Serenissima.
A reading of Casanova that goes beyond the usual imagery, the ‘myth’ consolidated in the interpretative tradition that surrounds him. A complex character, Casanova travelled from Venice throughout Europe during a historical period of rapid cultural and political change, in which a vision of European society pervaded by uncertainty, tension and increasingly free and stratified cultural debate was taking shape.
In Casanova’s writings, we find many of the contradictions and drives for change that Europe is experiencing today. An original reinterpretation encouraging us to view the past as a witness to the present.
