Lucio Fontana: Origins and Imagination

Lucio Fontana. Origins and Imagination brings together the outcomes of the study days promoted by the Institute of Art History of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini and the Fondazione Lucio Fontana, held on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore on 5 and 6 December 2024.

Edited by Silvia Ardemagni, Luca Massimo Barbero, and Maria Villa, the publication includes contributions by Ester Coen, Nico Stringa, Francesco Tedeschi, Valerio Terraroli, Giovanni Bianchi, Daniela Alejandra Sbaraglia, Lorena Mouguelar, Luca Bochicchio, Sileno Salvagnini, Giorgina Bertolino, Paolo Campiglio, Silvia Bignami, Stefano Turina, Barbara Ferriani, Luca Pietro Nicoletti, Francesco Guzzetti, Choghakate Kazarian, Marina Pugliese, Cristina Beltrami, and Gianni Caravaggio.

The essays collected in the volume explore various themes related to the life and work of Lucio Fontana: from the imagery that nourished Fontana’s avant-garde vision, to key moments in his biography and the international developments that took place between the 1950s and 1960s. Significant attention is also devoted to exhibitions, through a selection of case studies that shaped the artist’s critical reception and legacy.
