Ethnomusicology Seminar
The 15th International Seminar of Ethnomusicology, organised by the Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies, sets out to reverse the usual observer/observed relation which has always characterised music-ethnographic studies. Thus for once the ethnographer becomes the subject of reflection and assessment by musicians and singers who perform the oral-tradition music studied by ethnomusicologists.
How has ethno-music research influenced developments and current performances in terms of forms, instruments, genres, styles and repertories of the traditions which it has dealt with? How much has it contributed to knowledge of these aspects and their diffusion? Or how far has it led to a kind of myth-making and “mummification”?
Just how far have ethnomusicological studies and the various folk revival movements and the collecting of native music in the 20th century mutually conditioned each other in the construction of an ideology of conservation and promotion of the so-called “music identities”?
How much has the intercultural diffusion of various world music cultures – encouraged by ethnomusicological documentation – contributed to new forms, languages and sensibilities in the world of contemporary music production?
These are just some of the issues that will be addressed at the 2010 Seminar which starts from the narratives of the first-hand experience of the ethnomusicologists who will take part in the proceedings – Giorgio Adamo, Francesco Giannattasio, Giovanni Giuriati, Ignazio Macchiarella and SperanŠ£a Rădulescu – together with the musicians – Emil Mihaiu, Moya Aliya Malamusi, Marian Serban, Riccardo Tesi and the singers of Su Concordu ‘e su Rosariu from Santu Lussurgiu (Giovanni Ardu, Mario Corona, Roberto Iriu and Antonio Migheli).
Free admission
As part of the three study days, on Friday 29 January, the musicians taking part in the seminar will perform at the Teatro Fondamenta Nuove. This fascinating gathering involving exchanges between different music traditions is the result of collaboration between the Giorgio Cini Foundation and the Teatro Fondamenta Nuove.
Admission by invitation only
