From Paolo Veneziano to Canova
The Giorgio Cini Foundation is exhibiting a selection of seventy-two works restored by the Veneto Region over the last twenty years. On loan from major Veneto museums, these pieces include paintings and frescos as well as sculptures, tapestries and fabrics that make it possible to trace the chronology of Veneto art from the 14th to the early 19th century. The exhibition provides an opportunity to rediscover undisputed protagonists of Venetian and Veneto art and to approach less renowned figures who bear witness to the vast exploration in style perpetuated over the centuries in the dialogue between Venice and its neighbouring cities. In certain phases, many of these centres actually boasted distinctive trends and schools of art or became known for a tradition of high-quality workshops.
Many memorable exhibitions held immediately after the war addressed the major trends in Veneto art. The Cini Foundation played a key role in this dialogue, promoting the publication of a series of catalogues on the Veneto museums. In this vein, the Foundation has seized the region’s offer to mount a pictorial journey that radiates from Venice to the surrounding areas in the discovery of a not as yet fully explored heritage. The restoration of these works has opened new doors, providing material for further studies that broaden the field of research.
The exhibition was curated by the Institute of Art History under the direction of Alessandro Bettagno. The advisory committee was led by Francesco Valcanover and composed of representatives of the Superintendencies of Venice and the Veneto and the directors of the major regional museums.
