Good and Bad Government

The exhibition is inspired by Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s fascinating allegory in the well-known frescoes at Palazzo Pubblico in Siena and offers an elaborate excursus on the images of ‘good and bad government’, of political activities and their effects.
It is being held in co-ordination with I Dialoghi di San Giorgio, a new cultural event sponsored by the Giorgio Cini Foundation (and focused this year on Atmospheres for freedom. Towards an ecology of good government, 15 – 17 September) and Making Things Public, an exhibition on the methods for sharing knowledge and decisions about public affairs (to be held in 2005 at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe).

The exhibition displays works illustrating the iconography of good and bad government, as well as the symbols, myths and allegories that have represented political power over the centuries. It is divided into four sections:
1. The iconography of good and bad government: Siena
2. Venice
3. Opera librettos
4. 19th- and 20th-century decoration of parliaments and public buildings

In addition to paintings, illustrated manuscripts, sculptures, drawings, prints and objets d’art, the exhibition includes three videos on:
– The iconography of good and bad government
– Venice
– Parliament decoration

There will also be a Quodlibet, providing visitors a selection of sound tracks related to or evocative of the exhibition theme.
