Historical Studies Seminar
This seminar sets out to examine and discuss a theme of common interest to the various disciplines summed up in the title: Ut pictura historia; ut historia pictura. The papers due to be presented and the ensuing discussions will attempt to grasp the importance of interactions between the fi elds of historiography, visual arts and writing. On one hand, stories lead to the production of fi gures while, on the other, fi gures in turn also inspire stories. For example,
the mosaics telling the story of St. Mark in the Basilica of San Marco, Venice, in some ways became a source for written accounts and were referred to by the chronicler Martino da Canal. The papers at the seminar will be given alternately by senior scholars and young researchers according to a formula already successfully tried out in the previous editions.
