Luigi Nono 1924 – 1990. Maestro of sounds and silences

This exhibition has been organised by the Giorgio Cini Foundation and the Luigi Nono Archive in honour of the tenth anniversary of Luigi Nono’s death. The collocation of the Venetian composer’s entire legacy at the Luigi Nono Archive in Venice has made it possible to mount an exhibit displaying invaluable musical manuscripts and personal objects. On view for the first time, they invite the spectator to explore the many facets of Luigi Nono as a musician of international repute, politically engaged man of culture and maestro of great infuence.
The first section of the exhibition is biographical and displays twenty-three photographic panels complemented by original material, autograph musical compositions and quotations from the maestro. An album of amateur photos documents the composer’s many meetings with well-known figures in the international world of culture.
The second section is dedicated to Nono’s theatrical works, ‘Intolleranza 1960’ (1961), ‘Al gran sole carico d’amore’ (1975) and ‘Prometeo’ (1984). The latter collaboration with painter Emilio Vedova, conductors Bruno Maderna and Claudio Abbado, director Juri Ljubimov, stage designer David Borovski and architect Renzo Piano is well documented by photographs, projections, videos and models of the stage set.
The third section traces the genesis of Nono’s ‘La fabbrica illuminata’ (1964), a work for soprano and magnetic tape. The public will be able to follow the various steps of the composer’s creative process leading to the world premiere at Teatro La Fenice in Venice: collection of sounds, selection of texts (edited by Giuliano Scabia), making of the tape, and rehearsals with the singer and the electronics.
A listening room equipped with cd players, headphones and scores of a selection of Nono’s compositions will make it possible for the public to learn more about the composer’s music.
