Masterworks from the Collection of the Giorgio Cini Foundation

Some decades after the memorable exhibitions of illustrated manuscripts and drawings held in Tokyo, Teheran and several German cities in the late sixties, highlights from the collections donated by Vittorio Cini to the Foundation are being shown once again in major museums throughout Europe and the world. In celebration of the re-opening of its painting gallery, the Israel Museum of Jerusalem is displaying 70 drawings selected from among the Foundation’s nearly 7,000 works (including pieces by the Carraccis, Guercino, Reni, Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, the Bibienas, Domenichino); 14 large illuminated folios from the 15th century from among the collection’s 350 works; the illuminated manuscript ‘Martyrology of the “Battuti Neri” of Ferrara’; six illustrated books from the Renaissance from among the collection’s over 2000 incunabula and ‘cinquecentine’; Vincenzo Coronelli’s book of etchings, the Singularity of Venice; and two outstanding panels, Dosso Dossi’s Allegory of Laughter, Grief, Fear and Anger and Pontormo’s Portrait of Two Friends.
An important collection of Renaissance bronzes, belonging to the New York collector Alexis Gregory, accompanies the masterpieces of the Cini Foundation. Recently donated to Harvard University’s Fogg Art Museum, this collection includes masterpieces by Riccio, Aspetti, Roccatagliata, Sansovino, Algardi and Della Porta.
