Profane and Sacred Love
This series of concerts with lectures to be held in the Sale Apollinee of the Teatro La Fenice on 21 May, 10, 20 and 26 June and 6 October at 8 pm has been organised by the Guido Alberto Fano Musical Archive in collaboration with the Teatro La Fenice and Giorgio Cini Foundation Institute for Music.
The series has been inspired by Titian’s Sacred and Profane Love. Couched in a complex hermetic symbology, the celebrated painting shows two opposed, complementary faces of love: earthly and spiritual love. Freely reversed, the title becomes the pretext for framing Guido Alberto Fano’s vocal and chamber music in new thematic contexts. Through various musical declensions of the theme of love, they recreate a mixture of pagan and spiritual elements, similar to what happens in Titian’s work. The conceptual association with Fano’s musical output is very close on the grounds of the importance for the composer of the aesthetic principles informing his art throughout a long and tormented career and of the dialectic between the idea of seductive, earthly carnal love and that of pure, gentle celestial love.
