Russian symbolism: Serge Djaghilev and the Silver Age in art
The exhibition has been organised by the Giorgio Cini Foundation, Olivetti S.p.A. and the Russian International Foundation for Culture with various objectives in mind. First and foremost it seeks to introduce the Italian public to the extraordinary period of Russian art called the Silver Age and to place the work of Serge Diaghilev, who is buried in Venice, within the context of the important movement. It also strives to offer insight into the work of important Russian collectors by displaying objects on loan from various private collections.
The Silver Age generated many a remarkable cultural figure in disciplines ranging from poetry to philosophy, music, painting, theatre and architecture. Poets, critics, directors, musicians worked intensely, actively creating and exalting the theory of their work, and giving birth to Russian symbolism, one the century’s most interesting and important expressions of culture world-wide.
