The Ludwig Van Picture Show.//The Devil’s Eye

The music and films series “The Ludwig Van Picture Show” continues in May in the splendid setting of the Palazzo Cini at San Vio. The first date in the month features Ingmar Bergman’s film The Devil’s Eye, a fanciful “rondo” inspired by Domenico Scarlatti’s sonatas and starring Jark Kulle, Bibi Andersson and Stig Jarrel.
Film buffs generally class this film, made from 1959 to 1960, among Bergman’s decidedly minor works. It is, however, highly thought-provoking in exploring ethical-spiritual themes handled with grace and elegance as a “rondo” − informed by Scarlatti − unfolding in a fanciful play of allusions and farcical insinuations.
