Libri a San Giorgio | «Ecco il mondo»: Arrigo Boito, il futuro nel passato e il passato nel futuro

Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice
plus JUN, 23 2022

The book review that aims at promoting and popularizing the publishing production of the Giorgio Cini Foundation resumes in June.
On June 23rd, the volume «Ecco il mondo»: Arrigo Boito, il futuro nel passato e il passato nel futuro will be presented. The book is edited by Maria Ida Biggi, Emanuele d’Angelo and Michele Girardi and published by Marsilio. The book, published as part of the National Committee for Boito Celebrations, is proposed as an updated and indispensable tool to mark the state of research and studies on the multifaceted work of Boito, one of the most influential artists and intellectuals in Italy at the turn of the century. Specialists and scholars from the different artistic fields that characterized the career of the celebrated intellectual have reread and reanalyzed his production as a composer, librettist and avant-garde man of letters, his activity as a theatre and music critic, and his work as a translator and theatre director, returning to historical avenues of research and opening up new ones.
Furthermore, special attention was given to the opera Mefistofele, a milestone of the 19th-century Italian opera repertoire, which, first performed in 1868 at La Scala in Milan, was a memorable fiasco. It was resurrected in a revised version from the 1875 Bologna revival, entering the world opera repertoire.
