Music and Rites: Nat Pwe. Music and Dance in Spirit Worship in Yangon

plus Nov, 1617 2017

The third event in the Music and Rites series – organised by the Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies in collaboration with Ca’ Foscari University, Venice – features a whole troupe of Burman musicians and dancers. The group is made up of seven musicians (ensemble Academy Myanmar Pyi Kyauk Sein) and four medium- dancers. These artists already perform together in celebrating rituals (nat pwe) associated with the worship of local spirits (nat) in the city of Yangon (Rangoon) in Myanmar (Burma).

The aim of the event is thus to recreate a typical nat pwe, albeit on a reduced time scale.
