n October-2019 the Giorgio Cini Foundation will dedicate an Egida Sartori and Laura Alvini Early Music Seminar to English liturgical and devotional repertoires of the mid-sixteenth century. While focussing on the mass-settings of John Taverner, Christopher Tye, and John Sheppard occasionally based on traditional melodies such as Westron Wynde (Western wind) the Seminar will also discuss some of their motets, psalms and antiphons. These witness the religious controversies following the German and English Reformations after the 1530s, and during the reign of Mary Tudor (1553-58).

As in previous occasions, the Seminar will be supported by partner Foundations such as Fondation Concordance and the foundations Irma Merk, and L. + Th. La Roche. The main teacher will be the English specialist Peter Phillips, founder of The Tallis Scholars, Reed Rubin Director at Merton College, Oxford, and first-rank expert in the chosen repertoires. With over two thousand concerts and countless recordings he contributed like no one else to the dissemination and promotion of English-Renaissance polyphony.
