Transnational Sufism in contemporary societies:  International Conference

Fondazione Giorgio Cini invites submissions for an international conference on “Transnational Sufism in Contemporary Societies,” to be held on San Giorgio Island, Venice, on the 9th – 11th   November 2017, organised by Francesco Piraino (Scuola Normale Superiore) and Mark Sedgwick (Aarhus University).

Fondazione Giorgio Cini, with this conference, aims to gather researchers from around the world to develop reflections on Sufism and Islamic spirituality in contemporary societies, in its ethical, philosophical, theological, social, and political manifestations.

The themes of the conference (which you will find in detail in the call for papers) are: 1) the cultural and social politics of contemporary Sufism, 2) the reconfigurations of Sufi identities, 3) a reflection on the categories used: what do Sufism, mysticism, and esotericism mean?

  1. The call for papers is open – 13th of January 2017.
  2. Abstracts (300-500 words maximum) and CVs to be received by 15th March 2017.
  3. Notifications of acceptance will be given by 15th April 2017.
  4. Papers in French or in English (between 6000 and 7000 words – including references), to be received by 1st September 2017.
