This book marks the latest stage in the study and use of the Fondazione Cini’s graphic art heritage by bringing together the results of careful research and the cataloguing of the significant large group of Gandolfi drawings in the Certani Collection. Consisting of over 5,000 sheets assembled by the virtuoso cellist and composer Antonio Certani, the collection was acquired by Vittorio Cini and then donated to the Foundation in 1963.
Preceded by a very informative introductory essay, the section dedicated to the catalogue of works presents over one hundred drawings attributable to the Gandolfi family, remarkable leading figures in Emilian figurative art in the 18th and 19th centuries. Alongside admirable autograph sheets by Ubaldo, Gaetano and Mauro Gandolfi and equally interesting drawings by the workshop assistants (notably Domenico and Filippo Pedrini), ample room is also given over to academic drawings. This latter part of the book provides fascinating insight into the world of artists’ education and training in 18th-century Bologna, a hitherto little-studied microcosm, reconstructed by the editor with great historical and philological rigour.
