Il volume raccoglie i risultati di un convegno dedicato al tema della riforma universitaria in Europa, organizzato dalla Fondazione Giorgio Cini e dalla Oxford University, in collaborazione con l’European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management. Il principale merito di questa pubblicazione consiste nella opportunità che essa offre di confrontare, attraverso contributi teorici e case studies, i diversi progetti di riforma universitaria realizzati in Europa negli ultimi anni, mettendo in evidenza il rapporto esistente tra l’effi cienza del sistema economico e produttivo del singolo Paese e l’effi cacia del relativo ordinamento universitario riformato.
Offrendo spunti anche al di fuori dei confini dell’Europa, il libro rileva una particolarità della situazione attuale: l’università, forse per la prima volta nella sua storia millenaria, viene spinta a dei cambiamenti dall’esterno. I progetti di riforma nei paesi europei sono, infatti, dettati principalmente dal desiderio politico di semplifi care la gestione dei sistemi universitari in termini di compatibilità, comparabilità e accessibilità. A partire da questa osservazione, il volume invita a soffermarsi su quali aspetti sono limitati a situazioni contingenti, locali e a breve termine e quali, invece, hanno effetti ricorrenti, globali e di lungo termine.
